The Maryland Renaissance Festival in 1979, two years after live-action role playing (larping) started in the United States.
Brian Wiese, a college student who had just arrived had read Lord of the Rings and had watched the 1976 movie 'Robin and Marian' started the first battles, naming it Hobbit Wars.
Being an improvisational actor he quite enjoyed the experience as the first six battles took place between 1977 and 1978 with the objective being capture the flag.
In the beginning costumes were not required but still encouraged, those without costumes ended up losing interest quickly.
In these first battles each had three lives, in 1979 with increasing media coverage and the advent of cheaper answering machines the first Maryland Renaissance Festival took place from these humble beginnings.
While it has existed in the past in other forms it was mainly for the audience, but as other similar groups started forming independently from each other it grew into something more for the participants themselves.
This particular form of larping was later renamed to Dagorhir, the Elvish word in Lord of the Rings for Battle Lords.
